August 2007: Roswell Park Technology Fuels Third Biotech Company READ MORE - CLICK HERE BUFFALO, NY – Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) and AndroBioSys, Inc. (ABS) today announced a licensing and investment agreement that gives ABS exclusive rights to patented technology held by James Mohler, MD and Gary Smith, PhD, co-leaders of the Prostate Cancer Program at RPCI and founders of ABS. This agreement also provides RPCI with an equity position in the company. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed potentially life-threatening cancer in men in the United States. One in six men will be affected by this disease during their lifetime. AndroBioSys will focus its efforts on identifying specific targets in prostate tumors (e.g. prostate vasculature, tumor stem cells and androgen metabolism) which may be developed to improve prostate cancer treatment. Using unique human cell and tissue-based screening tools, the company will identify candidate drugs and verify their specificity and activity. ABS will negotiate license agreements with pharmaceutical companies for further clinical evaluation of these potential therapeutic agents. “Roswell Park is pleased to provide a robust infrastructure that encourages and supports bench to bedside research,” said Donald L. Trump, MD, President & CEO, RPCI. “Early-stage life science companies are important engines for medical innovation and economic growth in Western New York.” “This is the third spin-off for Roswell Park this year,” noted Richard Matner, PhD, MBA, Roswell Park’s Director of Technology and Commercial Development. “The Institute’s investment in these start-up initiatives moves discoveries closer to commercial development and creates a series of models for future innovation.” “Androgen deprivation therapy is the most common systemic treatment for prostate cancer; the treatment is very effective for inducing remission but those remissions last only a few years. The primary goal of ABS is to pioneer new therapeutic approaches for advanced prostate cancer that will make androgen deprivation therapy curative, not palliative,” said Dr. Mohler, who also serves as Chair of RPCI’s Department of Urologic Oncology. “In addition, these activities may result in new approaches for more effective treatment of benign prostate diseases and other types of cancers.” Initial plans call for ABS to employ six people and be located at 73 High Street, in Buffalo. Michael Zwick, PhD, who formerly served as Vice President of Business Development, at Neoclone Biotechnology in Madison, WI, has been appointed as ABS Chief Executive Officer to lead the company in its efforts to attract grants and investments and manage the contract research program. “Trends in the pharmaceutical industry support outsourcing of early-stage research and licensing of new compounds through innovative medical start-up companies,” commented Dr. Zwick. “ABS will offer contract research screening services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporate clients using our proprietary predictive model systems.” Roswell Park Cancer Institute, founded in 1898, is the nation’s first cancer research, treatment and education center and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Upstate New York.
